The Chemical Sun Screen Controversy- what the Companies don't want you to know...
As the sun shines more these days (hope it's soon!) the topic of skin cancer & sunscreen seem all around us. Surprising to many of us (who believe that all sunscreen is good for us & created fairly equal) research is showing that chemical sunscreens may be contributing to genetic damage & skin cancer (that’s almost everything you buy in common stores—many say "wait 15 min before going in the sun") If we ask ourselves, "what is happening in that 15 minutes before you can go in the sun?" many of us find we have never really thought about it- or if we did, we assume it can't be bad for us. Think again... Check for yourself – enter the word “sunscreen” into www.wikipedia.org and see the controversy. As long as there is controversy like this, Mackie Naturals’ is making the safer choice! I predict a time in the future where we cannot believe we slathered ourselves (and our more vulnerable kids!) in the chemical soups that line the shelves today. Ever wonder why the label says not to put these on babies? Research is showing that these harmful chemicals are being detected in the urine in test groups – hours after applying the chemical sunscreen.
The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in North America is a major concern and research shows that the active ingredients (toxic chemicals) in some sunscreens may be contributing to genetic damage and skin cancer.
In simple terms, the chemicals in your sunscreen can absorb the rays' energy, become energized, and chemically reactivate themselves. This can lead to a chemical reaction in the skin, creating free radicals and causing DNA damage --subsequently a greater risk of skin cancer can develop. *(see below for a list of chemicals to be aware of)
Pure Mineral sunscreens on the other hand, do not have a chemical reaction with your skin (apply and go in the sun right away) and act as reflective sun blocks. Ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, provide this physical barrier to the sun, do not irritate skin, and protect against both UVA, UVB & UVC rays. (few sunscreens block against UVB & UVC unless they have physical barriers such as zinc or titanium dioxide in them.) see our recommendations for face & body (kids & adults)
You do have choices, however physical sunscreens can be more difficult to find as the general public has not demanded healthier sun screen choices yet. Manufacturers continue to use cheap chemical ingredients, while other ethical companies use minerals & other botanical ingredients & keep harmful chemicals off your skin.
Our focus is all about healthy sunscreen education -- in your lip products, hair products (save your new color!) or face & body. You do have healthy choices for your whole family -- see what we love & use at Mackie Naturals.
- As a simple rule – if the label says wait before going in the sun (after applying the sunscreen), then it’s a chemical sunscreen & is having some unknown reaction with your skin – why risk it when you can choose something else?
*Researchers encourage consumers to READ THE LABELS on sun care products. If the product contains any of the following chemical ingredients, think twice before applying to your skin (and think instead about a physical sunblock):
- Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)
- PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA,
- p-aminobenzoic acid padimate O or Octyl dimethyl PABA)
- Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl, p-methoxycinnamate)
- Avobenzone (butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane; Parsol 1789)
- Digalloyl trioleate
- Menthyl anthranilate
