What you should know about sunscreen...

Research is showing that chemical sunscreens may be contributing to genetic damage & skin cancer (that’s almost everything you buy in common stores—you know the ones that say wait 15 min before going in the sun)  Ask yourself:

  1. What do you think is happening in that 15 minutes before you can go in the sun?

The increasing occurrence of skin cancer in North America is a major concern and research shows that the active ingredients (toxic chemicals) in some sunscreens may contribute to genetic damage and skin cancer.

In simple terms, the chemicals in your sunscreen can absorb the rays' energy, become energized, and chemically reactivate themselves. This can lead to a chemical reaction in the skin, creating free radicals & causing DNA damage --subsequently a greater risk of skin cancer can develop. *(see below for list of chemicals to be aware of)

Pure Mineral sunscreens on the other hand, do not have a chemical reaction with your skin and act as reflective sun blocks. Ingredients such as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, provide this physical barrier to the sun, do not irritate skin, and protect against both UVA and UVB rays. (This is also why the Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics (lip products, powders, liquid minerals, Eminence Sun Defence stick/ powder) offer great sun protection)

Mineral sunscreens can however be quite difficult to find and the average consumer is under the impression that all sunscreen products are created equal.

We have finally found Newco's Natural Mineral Sun Block which has an SPF of 15. The ingredient list is NOT loaded with chemicals (even the preservative is Grapefruit Seed Extract (we're excited!) so we can feel great about applying this on our kids as well. (checkout the ingredients in the left column)

*Researchers encourage consumers to READ THE LABELS on sun care products. If the product contains any of the following chemical ingredients, use discretion before applying to your skin:

Benzophenones (dixoybenzone, oxybenzone)
  • PABA and PABA esters (ethyl dihydroxy propyl PAB, glyceryl PABA,
  • p-aminobenzoic acid padimate O or Octyl dimethyl PABA)
  • Cinnamates (cinoxate, ethylhexyl, p-methoxycinnamate)
  • Avobenzone (butyl-methyoxydibenzoylmethane; Parsol 1789)
  • Digalloyl trioleate
  • Menthyl anthranilate

Propylene Glycol: Called a humectant in cosmetics, it is industrial antifreeze, and the major ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid. Material Data Sheets on Propylene Glycol warn to avoid skin contact as it is systemic and can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

What is Threading?

Threading is a centuries old technique that has been commonly practiced in East Asia and the Middle East. By using a piece of thread, hair can be removed swiftly yet meticulously from the most delicate areas of the face. Facial Threading is the best alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin Threading is by far the least invasive, most precise method of hair removal, leaving the skin clean and smooth.

How does it work?

By knotting the thread and creating a trap, hairs are caught and forced out by the root. The rapid back and forth movement removes hair very efficiently. Depending upon the client's needs, hair can be removed individually or a few at a time.
